Abstract: Modernization of education in Ottoman Jerusalem: A dedication to the liberalism of the Sultanate state or a dedication to its authoritarianism? The study offers a new perspective on the educational system in Ottoman Jerusalem during the pre-Tanzimat period (1839-1876) and its post-Tanzimat phases, encompassing both traditional and modern aspects. Through a micro-historical lens and a critical analysis of contemporary historical writings on education in Ottoman Jerusalem, the study examines the liberal nature of education in the Ottoman city. It attempts to address the complex interplay between religion and politics within the educational systems of Ottoman Jerusalem since the Tanzimat era, seeking to answer the question: Did the "modernization" of education in Ottoman Jerusalem foster liberalism or state authoritarianism? The study concludes that Ottoman policy toward education in Jerusalem contributed to the establishment of a liberal educational system from the beginning of the 16th century, predating the emergence of the concept of liberalism as developed by 17th-century thinkers such as John Locke and Thomas Hobbes. Furthermore, this liberalism was positively utilized by some non-Muslim religious communities in Jerusalem, contributing to a scientific renaissance, unlike other communities that failed to capitalize on the educational liberalism granted to them by the state. The Ottoman Empire's abandonment of its educational liberalism and its adoption of the "modern state" model since the Tanzimat reforms contributed to the consolidation of its authoritarianism. This, in turn, fueled the demands of the various nationalities living under its rule, leading them to seek independence and the formation of their own separate entities.
