University Absenteeism: Economic Determinants, Impacts, And Mitigation Strategies

Authors : Ibbou Amina . Si Ali Mohammed Reda .

Abstract

University absenteeism remains a pressing concern, not only for its immediate impact on learning but also for its potential to lead to student dropout—a persistent challenge facing higher education worldwide. This study explores the interplay between socio-economic constraints, institutional factors, and personal circumstances in shaping attendance patterns. Based on survey data and a combined statistical approach—correlation analysis and Principal Component Analysis (PCA)—the findings reveal that absenteeism is most strongly influenced by employment obligations, commuting difficulties, financial pressures, and students’ perceptions of institutional support.
