Abstract Geography in the Middle Ages underwent a significant shift in its development toward a new horizon within the Islamic civilization system, which was nourished by the local heritage of many civilizations. The expansion of the Caliphate led to the activity of travelers for various reasons, and their writings became an integral part of geography, which studies urban structures, including cities, walls, and fortresses, as well as descriptions of ongoing battles and the conditions of the peoples with whom they interacted. Therefore, travel became an integral part of social life. Arab writers commonly used the term "travel literature" to refer to the writings of Arab and Muslim geographers and travelers who traveled between countries and described their people, thus leaving behind a rich body of literary elements, combining description and revelation, personal impressions and adventure, within a cohesive literary structure and a fluid style that often entertains and engages the reader. Therefore, many geographical writings contain various literary genres, such as novels, essays, and poetry, as well as numerous literary features such as tales, news, anecdotes, and antiquities. These journeys combined geography, literature, and anthropology, narrating the conditions of nations and countries. Their writings varied between the genres of literature, biography, description, and geography, and were, in their entirety, an Arab-Islamic masterpiece in the various branches of these sciences. This study aims to reveal the relationship between the genres of travel, geography, and historical writing.
