The Digital Twin As A Tool For Redefining Logistics Performance In The Industry 4.0 Era: Dhl’s Pioneering Experience

Authors : Chermat Imad . Benzid Youcef .

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the practical application, benefits, and challenges associated with adopting a logistics digital twin (LDT) by examining a large-scale DHL implementation. This analysis is critical, as increasing complexity and disruption challenge traditional management in the global logistics sector. Logistics digital twins (LDTs), which are dynamic virtual copies that integrate real-time IoT, operational, and external data, offer transformative potential. Using a qualitative case study methodology that relies exclusively on publicly available secondary data (company reports, white papers, and press releases), this paper examines DHL's strategic approach. The findings reveal that DHL is using logistics digital twins to optimize smart warehouses (using simulation and artificial intelligence to manage design/operations/resources) and enhance transportation network resilience (using multi-source data for visibility, predictive disruption mitigation, and dynamic routing). Documented results include significant gains in operational efficiency, cost reductions, improved customer visibility, and increased supply chain resilience. The DHL study demonstrates the enormous potential of advanced development technologies in complex operational environments, highlighting the critical success factors: mastery of data integration, strategic phased execution, cross-functional collaboration and focus on actionable insights that drive positive outcomes for logistics facilities.
