Attempts To Reform The Military Institution In Algeria During The Ottoman Era The Experience Of Dey Ali Khoja 1817-1818

Abstract
The Janissary army in Algeria played an honorable role in defending the Eyala and repelling external raids, and this was demonstrated by its repeated victories against external attacks. However, its interference in political matters, its involvement in conspiracies against the rulers, and its participation in the repeated assassinations of the Deys, were a cause of political instability in Algeria. This led some Algerian rulers to think about disposing of this group and replacing it with local elements. Dey Ali Khoja (1817-1818 AD) almost succeeded in doing this, had it not been for his death due to infection with the plague epidemic. قام الجيش الإنكشاري بالجزائر بدور مشرف في الدفاع عن الإيالة وصد الغارات الخارجية وقد شهد له بذلك تلك الانتصارات المتكررة على الاعتداءات الخارجية عليها. إلا أن تدخلاته في الأمور السياسية وتورطه في المؤامرات على الحكام، ومشاركته في الاغتيالات المتكررة للدايات، فكان هذا سببا في عدم الاستقرار السياسي في الجزائر؛ مما أدى ببعض حكام الجزائر التفكير في التخلص من هذه الفرقة واستبدالها بعناصر محلية، وقد كاد الداي علي خوجة(1817-1818م) أن ينجح في ذلك لولا وفاته اثر إصابته بوباء الطاعون.
