In the narrative of translation, the concept of paratext plays a central role in shaping how a text is processed. Defined by Genette (1997) as a “threshold” between the text and its external discourse, the paratext subsumes under its heading numerous elements such as titles, covers, footnotes, introductions, and annotations that act as mediators between the reader and the main text. In this respect, this paper investigates how paratextual interventions influence the textual accessibility and interpretation of translated texts. It further questions the function of paratextual elements as either needed interpretative tools or potential disruptions. By examining the paratextual strategies employed by Ibesch in his translation of Blunt’s“A Pilgrimage to Nejd,” this research used a qualitative textual analysis of Ibesch’s use of annotations, footnotes, and other textual interventions. The study further examined the extent to which a text’s processing is either compromised or enhanced by means of these elements. Within the confines of this work, the findings corroborated the broader debate on translation agency, the limits of textual intervention, and the growing role of paratext in cross cultural textual dissemination.
