Phonetic Alternations In The Tlemcen Dialect Between Urban Centres And Surrounding Areas: A Phonetic Study

Authors : Khaldi Hicham . Benyahia Fatiha .

Abstract

Abstract: This study is confined solely to the phonetic dimension, that is, the articulation points and phonetic features of the two sounds ق (qāf) and ك (kāf), their modes of formation, and the principal phenomena and alternations that have affected them. Notably, the colloquial dialect of Tlemcen cannot be described or codified with precision because this city and its vast surrounding region have witnessed the convergence of diverse elements: urban dwellers from different Tlemcenian centres, villagers, Bedouin, and other non-Arab groups. Furthermore, the writing of the modern Arabic dialect exclusively in the traditional Arabic script proves unfeasible since the current state of Arabic orthography is inadequate for rendering the correct pronunciation of the modern Arabic dialect. This is because these dialects contain consonantal clusters and vowels for which the Arabic script possesses neither corresponding letters nor diacritical signs.
