Authors : Boukeffa Hamza .

Abstract

Tourism 2.0 marks a transformative shift in sustainable tourism through the integration of Smart Internet technologies such as IoT, AI, AR, VR, and Big Data. These tools enable real-time environmental monitoring, visitor flow management, and resource optimization, supporting ecological sustainability. They also facilitate cultural preservation via immersive digital experiences and storytelling, reducing physical strain on heritage sites. Economically, digital platforms and AI-driven systems empower local communities by promoting equitable revenue distribution and inclusive growth. This paper examines global applications and assesses Algeria’s potential to adopt Tourism 2.0 for sustainable development. Algeria’s natural and cultural assets position it well to benefit from smart technologies that balance tourism growth with sustainability. Challenges include infrastructure limitations, high costs, and digital accessibility, requiring strategic investment and policy support. By leveraging these innovations, Algeria can protect its ecosystems, preserve cultural heritage, and boost local economies. The study highlights how smart technologies contribute to all three pillars of sustainability: environmental protection, cultural respect, and economic resilience. It concludes that Tourism 2.0 offers a viable model for sustainable tourism development in North Africa. Strategic implementation can transform Algeria into a resilient, sustainable tourism destination aligned with global standards.
