This article aims to shed light on the national memory in exile through a historical and analytical reading of the October 17, 1961 demonstrations in Paris within their historical and diplomatic context. They constituted a pivotal event in the course of the Algerian Revolution and a major turning point in transferring the national cause to the international arena. Since their impact remains present in Algerian political memory and in contemporary Algerian–French relations, we devoted our research attention to them. The study was based on the minutes and resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly during its main sessions related to the presentation and discussion of the Algerian question, as well as archival documents and contemporary testimonies of the event. The findings show that the Paris demonstrations were not merely a protest by the Algerian community but an organized political act that portrayed the Algerian tragedy to the world as an extension of the internal struggle. They contributed to weakening the opponent’s diplomatic power and moved the Algerian issue beyond the common claim that “Algeria is an internal matter,” bringing it to discussion within the UN General Assembly, paving the way for recognition of the Algerian people’s right to self-determination.
