Leadership And Its Role In Achieving Outstanding Performance In Business Organizations: The General Electric Experience

Abstract

Outstanding organizational performance is no longer an option but a necessity imposed by intensely competitive environments. Leadership is the primary variable in the excellence equation, it affirms excellence by reducing the rules and regulations that constrain high performance. Many organizational successes are attributable to top leaders who sponsor the transformation of methods and practices and drive fundamental, substantive changes to advance institutional realities. General Electric offers a focal example of how business organizations can achieve excellence today. The key lies in understanding employees and engaging them in ways that bring out their best, thereby turning the organization into a setting rich in creativity and innovation and, beyond that, into a machine for producing leaders.
