This study aims to determine the impact of institutions on the knowledge economy for a sample of 18 countries that top the Global Knowledge Index for the period (1996-2020), using panel models and principal component analysis (PCA). The knowledge economy index was composed of three sub-indices: education, research and development, and information and communication technology. The institutional index was composed of six governance indicators, in addition to trade openness and per capita GDP. The study found that the institutions index has a positive impact on the knowledge economy. It is well known that the countries under study have led the world in institutional indicators for decades, which is the main factor that has helped them build a knowledge economy. This is also evident in the positive impact of the trade openness index, which reflects the availability of a favorable environment that has contributed to the transfer of knowledge and technology and trade exchanges between countries.
