Abstract: This research addresses the central problematic in theatre studies: the dialectical relationship between the written dramatic text and the live theatrical performance. Moving beyond the traditional view that regards performance as a mere faithful embodiment of the text, the paper argues that the mise en scène is a creative process of "transmutation," producing an independent artistic entity with its own distinct language. Employing an approach that integrates theatre semiotics and performance theories, the research analyzes how the linguistic sign is transformed into a complex network of scenographic signs (visual, auditory, and kinetic). The paper highlights the pivotal role of the director as a "second author" who rewrites the text through their directorial vision, the actor as a producer of meaning via their body and performance, and the spectator as an active partner in the process of interpretation. The research concludes that the value of contemporary theatre lies not in its fidelity to the literary source, but in its capacity to generate a polyphonic discourse that deconstructs fixed significations and opens new horizons for critical reception. This is especially true with the emergence of "postdramatic theatre" forms that merge the narrative and the dramatic. The performance is a text in its own right, its effectiveness measured by its ability to create an aesthetic and intellectual dialogue with the audience
