Abstract: Like other peoples around the world, the inhabitants of the Mauritanian territory recognized the importance of centralized authority and a unified state, given their role in preventing harm and promoting collective interests. As a result, the quest for a unified political system that could bring cohesion to the land, ensure public order, and provide a secure environment for the performance of religious obligations became a central concern for the region's population. This quest persisted from the fall of the Almoravid state until the establishment of the modern nation-state. Despite the emergence of various political projects and proposals throughout Mauritanian history, none succeeded in establishing a unified authority until the formation of the modern state. Prior to that, different regions managed their affairs independently, often relying on locally derived legal-religious justifications for their political structures. This paper seeks to examine a significant reformist experience that took place in the southwestern region of the country during the 17th century. It aims to introduce its pioneer, Imam Nasir al-Din, explore the foundations and principles upon which his movement was based, and highlight its role in addressing the political vacuum that had long afflicted the area. Keywords: Imamate, Authority, Mauritania, Political Reform, Imam Nasir al-Din.
