There is no doubt that scholars of Qur’anic recitation and performance played a significant role in elucidating the symbols and technical notations used by the Qur’anic readers (qurrāʾ) in the books of qirāʾāt (variant recitations), beginning from the 4th to the 6th centuries AH, and continuing in subsequent centuries. Scholars of the 6th century AH, in particular, made notable contributions in employing symbols and conventions to represent the readers, either by explicitly naming them or by referring to them through letters or signs, accompanied by analysis, comparison, and study. The importance of this topic lies in identifying the symbols used in their works to denote the readers, based on selected examples within the study. This research seeks to address two key questions: What was the methodology of the leading qurrāʾ in authorship, classification, and arrangement? And what were the symbols and performance conventions used in their compilations in the 6th century AH? The research is structured into an introduction, three main sections, and a conclusion. The researcher employed the following methodologies: Historical Methodology: By introducing the emergence of the science of qirāʾāt and the foundational texts that focused on symbolic and performance conventions. Descriptive and Exemplary Methodology: By examining and introducing key 6th-century qirāʾāt works that either named narrators explicitly or employed symbols to denote them, highlighting the major symbols and conventions used during that period in a concise manner, based on selected examples. Analytical Methodology: By studying and analyzing these symbols and conventions, clarifying their meanings, and tracing the influence of earlier works on later applications and usage within 6th-century qirāʾāt literature, based on the selected models.
