Following Algeria's ratification of the Unites Nations Convention against Corruption, and in an attempt to align national penal legislation with international legislation, particularly with regard to economic, organized, and cross-border crimes, the legislature enacted Law No 06/01. This coincided with the growing criminal phenomenon. The existence of a specific law addressing the crimes of embezzlement and misappropriation of public and private funds, bribery, and influence peddling suggests, from the outset, thah the legislature intended to impose deterrent penalties for these crimes, potentially limiting the judge's authority to grant mitigating sentences to the perpetrator of one or more corruption crimes.
