This review critically analyzes entrepreneurship education (EE) through a sociological lens, examining the persistent gap between its aspirational rhetoric—framing EE as a pathway to employability, innovation, and empowerment—and the complex realities faced by university students. Drawing on institutional theory, social identity theory, and Bourdieusian sociology, the paper explores how EE constructs entrepreneurial identities amid conflicting demands of neoliberal policies, pedagogical practices, and societal structures. Key findings reveal that EE often reproduces existing inequalities: socioeconomic barriers limit resource access for marginalized groups, cultural stigma marginalizes women and racial minorities, and institutional inertia perpetuates performative approaches over transformative learning. Critical perspectives highlight how neoliberal logics reduce EE to a tool for workforce development rather than critical engagement, erasing structural inequities. The synthesis emphasizes the need to reimagine EE as a force for inclusive, context-sensitive entrepreneurship—one that centers equity, challenges power imbalances, and prioritizes student agency over market-driven outcomes.
