Abstract: This article aims to redefine the rationalization of local politics as a multidimensional concept that goes beyond technical efficiency to include effectiveness, legitimacy, equity, and sustainability. The article tests the hypothesis that participatory democracy represents an alternative path to achieve this inclusive rationalization in the Algerian context. Using a critical analytical approach, the article examines the gap between text and practice in Algeria, especially after the 2020 constitutional amendment that enshrined the principle of participatory democracy. The analysis reveals a clear contradiction between an ambitious legal framework and a complex practical reality. The findings point to deep structural barriers including administrative centralization, bureaucratic resistance to change, and weak institutional capacities. The article concludes that achieving true rationalization requires radical reforms beyond legislation, proposing practical recommendations to promote decentralization,
