This study explores the use of apology speech acts by Master students of English at Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Setif 2 University. It examines students' awareness and ability to perform apologies in various contexts. Using a mixed-method approach with a questionnaire and a Discourse Completion Task , results revealed gender-based differences in apology strategies. Female students prefer negative politeness, while male students use positive politeness. Power dynamics also affect student-teacher apologies, with students opting for more indirect forms when addressing authority. The study suggests the need for explicit pragmatic instruction for a more effective communication.
