Abstract

The present paper addresses Danzy Senna’s debut coming-of-age novel Caucasia (1998) within an intersectional matrix of the entwined dynamics of race, gender and class. The focus is on how the protagonist, Birdie Lee, negotiates her complex identity in a racially stratified America of the 1970s. Using Kimberlé Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality., the study demonstrates how the experiences of the main character in terms of identity formation within the context of border crossing, highlight the complexity of mixed-race women lives. The study also discusses the psychological conflicts brought about by racial passing, through the story of Caucasia, which in its turn reveals the tension between self-authenticity and social survival. The story’s novelty stems from the author’s endeavour to re-invent or revive the trope of passing. The present paper will attempt to figure out how the main character’s transgression of racial and gender boundaries establish identity as constructed and performed.
