Résumé
Le roman algérien d'expression française puise ses origines dans un contexte de colonisation axé sur une politique d’assimilation et d’acculturation et hostile à toute manifestation identitaire indigène. Cette littérature, dite des précurseurs et souvent qualifiée de littérature dominée ou d’assimilationniste, représente les premières manifestations de revendication de l’identité culturelle par des auteurs algériens. L'objectif de notre contribution est de proposer une étude du roman Ahmed Ben Mostapha, goumier, paru en 1920 et signé de la plume de Caïd Mohamed Bencherif. Nous analyserons cette œuvre pionnière dans une perspective anthropologique, culturelle et linguistique. Nous soulignerons sa portée documentaire et la volonté d'affirmation de soi de l’auteur à travers des exemples tirés de l'œuvre. The Algerian novel written in French traces its origins in a period that coincided with the colonial era characterized by assimilationist policies and systematic efforts at acculturation. These policies were, notably, hostile to any form of indigenous identity expression. Consequently, this early body of literature often referred to as pioneering literature and frequently labeled as dominated or assimilationist constitutes the first attempts by indigenous authors to assert their cultural identity through the medium of the French language. In this context, the purpose of our contribution is to examine the novel, Ahmed Ben Mostapha, Goumier, which was published in 1920 and authored by Caïd Mohamed Bencherif. Through a multidisciplinary lens namely anthropological, cultural, and linguistic we aim to analyze this pioneering work. More specifically, we intend to emphasize its documentary significance and, at the same time, shed light on the author's conscious effort toward self-affirmation. To support our argument, we will draw on selected examples from the novel that illustrate how Bencherif negotiates identity and resistance within a colonially imposed linguistic framework. Ultimately, this analysis not only contributes to a better understanding of the novel’s historical and cultural value but also highlights its role in laying the groundwork for later developments in Algerian francophone literature.
