Authors : Bokreta Farouk . Bouzar Youssouf .

Abstract

The phenomenon of tattooing has existed in Algerian society since ancient times. In the past, women would adorn their faces with tattoos, symbols with well-known connotations among the people of the region. They were a form of adornment or a sign of fertility. Some women wore them to ward off the evil eye and envy, while others wore them to heal themselves from illnesses. Tattoos were also common among sailors and fishermen, demonstrating their strength and lack of fear of sailing. Tattoos were also known as a feature of prisoners and deviant individuals, expressing their strength and terrorizing their opponents. They also expressed their repressed feelings. This study aimed to identify the types of tattoos prevalent among the juvenile delinquents, the meanings these tattoos carry, and the reason that prompted them to tattoo them. The results reached were that most of the minors got tattoos to imitate their colleagues while they were in prisons, rehabilitation institutions, or high schools, as all of them only got tattoos inside these centers, and tattoos, according to their point of view at that time, were an expression of their repressed feelings and an expression of their psychological and social status.
