I addressed the importance of the road network and its role in the distribution of various types of defensive architecture in the Guelma region during the Roman and Byzantine periods, and the relationship of the latter to the various types of defensive architecture prevalent in the Guelma region (the city of Guelma and the surrounding villages and towns) during the Roman and Byzantine periods. I attempted to answer the problematic question of this simple intervention, which revolves around: Is the diversity of defensive architecture in the Guelma region actually linked to the road network, both primary and secondary, or is it due solely to the geographical and human nature of the region? To answer this problematic, the study was divided into two sections. The first section addressed the emergence of defensive architecture in ancient Morocco and the factors that led to its spread in the region. The second section addressed the importance of the road network and its role in military policy. The second section was devoted to studying its various types in terms of location, form, and construction methods, and its relationship to natural and human geography on the one hand, and the road network used in the Roman and Byzantine periods on the other.
