Algeria’s rich multicultural heritage, shaped by various civilizations, makes it a unique setting for toponymic studies. Focusing on Annaba, this research uses sociolinguistic methods to link place names to cultural and historical data, revealing how toponymy reflects identity, memory, and power. Annaba’s toponymy is notably diverse, drawing from Maghreb, Arab, French, Spanish, and other global influences, highlighting its plural urban identity. A strong presence of anthroponyms—especially the names of martyrs—underscores the city’s revolutionary history. Yet, paradoxically, some streets honor both martyrs and their executioners. The study also finds that colonial-era names persist in common usage despite official changes and that post-independence naming often overlooks other rich historical eras. These findings demonstrate the complex interplay between language, memory, and identity in postcolonial urban spaces.
