Amartya Sen’s capability approach to justice challenges conventional theories centered on resource distribution, advocating instead for a focus on individual capabilities—the genuine freedoms people have to lead lives they find valuable. By critiquing utilitarianism and Rawls’ theory of primary goods, Sen argues that a truly just society must enable individuals to realize their potential through opportunities that align with their unique aspirations and needs. His framework recognizes the complexity of human diversity and social contexts, combining economic insights with philosophical depth. This approach reframes development as the expansion of essential freedoms, moving beyond wealth toward fostering conditions that support individuals’ capacities to thrive.
