ABSTRACT : The pioneers of avant-garde theater understood the necessity of breaking away from the semiotics of Aristotelian textual theater and freeing themselves from the empty constructs imposed by Poetics. The language of the body relies on a semiotic system of signs and gestures, forming a symbolic language that establishes the relationship between the sender and the receiver. With the rise of postmodern theater, it became possible to discuss the body's inscription and its aesthetic and semiotic dimensions in theatrical performance. This development allowed the body to reclaim its expressive desire and mastery over gestural writing. In postmodern theater, the body has been extensively celebrated, and its discourse represents a significant shift away from classical theater and a true transcendence of the logic of reason. This logic had entrenched the authority of the text ever since theater came under the influence of Aristotle, who sought to strip dramatic performance of its semiotic richness, which is rooted in the textuality of the body's performance. Embodied theater, therefore, calls for abandoning the rhetoric of verbal semiotics and activating the body's kinetic text. What the body communicates does not adhere to the conventions of verbal discourse.
