Abstract Algeria, a nation that experienced rapid population growth post-independence, saw its population rise from 10.32 million right after gaining independence to 12.56 million by the year 1967. During the 1970s, the average fertility rate was remarkably high, with an average of eight children per woman. This population surge after independence can be attributed to a variety of interconnected factors, including social, economic, health-related, demographic, and historical influences. However, since the 1980s, there has been a marked and persistent decline in fertility rates, leading to a substantial reduction in the average number of children per woman to roughly two, specifically estimated at 2.27 children per woman by the year 2006. This significant decrease in fertility is primarily due to several factors, with the actual use of contraceptives playing a pivotal role. Contraceptive methods are categorized into traditional and modern types. By 2006, the usage rate of these methods had reached 61.4%. Modern methods are particularly favored among women of various educational backgrounds, with contraceptive pills being the most popular choice. The increase in contraceptive usage from 1986 to 2006 was chiefly due to the rising number of women opting for pills, with usage rates climbing from 26.4% in 1986 to 45.9% in 2006.The widespread availability and accessibility of these contraceptive methods have greatly facilitated their use. The expansion of mother and child protection centers, hospitals, and general health centers has played a crucial role in the distribution of methods that require medical intervention, such as IUDs and female sterilization. Moreover, pharmacies have played a significant role in making contraceptive pills available, which are considered the easiest and most frequently used method.
