Abstract

Many civilisations conquered Algeria over time. Its long history has made Algeria's linguistic situation complex, with Arabic and Tamazight as the official languages and French and English as the foreign languages. Due to French sovereignty for 132 years, the French language has been immersed in the Algerian culture by being used for daily speech, as well as in administration, media, business, and as a language tool for scientific fields at universities. However, recently, and because of political, economic, and scientific ends, the Algerian policymakers' vision has changed towards promoting the English language in various sectors, starting with the educational one. As a result, it began to be taught in third-year primary schools in 2022 and was implemented as a means of instruction at the tertiary level instead of French or Arabic in 2023. The present paper overviews the Algerian linguistic and educational situation. It describes the implementation process of English as a teaching linguistic tool at the university and the driving reasons behind it. It then provides an inventory of the few studies investigated in the subject area, mainly focusing on EMI teachers' perceptions. These studies reveal that instructors are generally conscious of the importance that English plays in today's globalised world; however, despite the efforts provided by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research regarding teachers' training, much work needs to be done, as the majority evoked their low proficiency level of English, which could impede course content delivery and students' comprehension.
