Abstract The French colonial authorities recognized that the success of the settlement project was linked to the success of the process of land expropriation from the local population, in order to provide a vast land base, both to facilitate settlement and to serve their agricultural policy. Land acquisition operations in Algeria were at the heart of French policy. To legitimize these operations, the colonial administration repeatedly justified its policies and formalized them through repressive laws and arbitrary regulations, which allowed for the dismantling of communal land ownership and its transfer to settlers. This article aims to detail two key laws: the Sénatus-Consulte and the Warnier Law, in order to examine their background, implications, and the outcomes of their implementation, as well as their impact on the social and economic landscape of the local community.
