Contact-induced Lexical Obsolescence In Tacawit: The Case Of Oum El Bouaghi

Authors : Chaira Farid . Berghout Abd El Ghafour .

Abstract

The present paper discusses the findings of a quantitative study of lexical erosion in some Tacawit speaking regions. It traces the obsolescence of a number of Berber words across twelve places in the state of Oum el Bouaghi, east of Algeria. The aim is to understand whether lexical obsolescence is prominent in some regions more than others, and, if so, to highlight some factors that led to such difference in the loss or maintenance of indigenous Berber forms. A list of 17 words that belong to shared Berber lexicon was devised and administered in Arabic to 428 informants. The study revealed that lexical obsolescence is present in the same degree across all the sites investigated except for few terms.
