This paper aims to explore the potential of the Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices as a tool for assessing nonverbal cognitive abilities among deaf children, while analyzing the challenges associated with its administration and the interpretation of its results in this population. The study is grounded in a theoretical framework that views the intelligence of deaf children as the outcome of a complex interaction between auditory deprivation, language development (spoken or signed), and educational experiences, which makes nonverbal tests a promising option for estimating fluid intelligence without the constraints of linguistic demands. Previous research has shown that the Advanced Raven’s Matrices can provide a useful indicator of visual inferential abilities in deaf children; however, score interpretation remains limited by several challenges, most notably the absence of norms specific to this group and the potential influence of factors such as visual attention, prior familiarity with pictorial materials, and problem‑solving strategies, The study suggests that the use of the Advanced Raven’s Matrices with deaf children should occur within a multidimensional assessment battery that includes additional nonverbal measures as well as linguistic and communicative evaluations, and calls for the standardization of the test on local samples of deaf children and the verification of its psychometric properties, in order to contribute to the development of more equitable and appropriate diagnostic tools for this population.
