Clifford Geertz’s interpretive anthropology represents an epistemological project that seeks to shift the social sciences from an explanatory field in search of universal laws to an interpretive one that reads culture as a symbolic text rich in meaning. This approach is centered on the tool of "thick description," which goes beyond the superficial observation of behavior to explore the deep contexts that give actions and rituals their significance from the perspective of the actors themselves. By viewing culture as a web of meanings spun by humans, Geertz’s study rejects generalizing theories in favor of microscopic studies. It asserts that the essence of anthropology lies not in measuring behavior, but in decoding symbols and understanding the social world from the viewpoint of the culture’s members thereby imparting a humanistic character to anthropological science that relies on dialogue and interpretation rather than mathematical abstraction or rigid scientific positivism.
