A Socio-pragmatic Analysis Of Apology Strategies Among Algerian Male And Female University Students

Authors : Zerrouki Nadia .

Abstract

This study explores the apology strategies used by Algerian male and female university students across four communicative situations that generally require an apology. It investigates the types of apology strategies used by students in general. Particularly, this work of research examines potential gender-based differences or similarities in their way of apologizing. Indeed, this study deals with Arabic language, especially the Algerian dialect, it demonstrates how apology strategies are employed to fix problems and keep good relationships after a given mistake. The present study is based on Sugimoto’s (1997) framework, which categorizes apology strategies into primary, secondary and seldom strategies. The data was collected through a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) developed by Blum -Kulka (1982), administered in four different situations. The analysis of the findings revealed that the participants employed three types of strategies suggested by Sugimoto (1997) which are primary, secondary and seldom strategies. In addition to these, they also used a mixed strategy, a newly observed category not found in Sugimoto’s (1997) taxonomy. The results also showed that both male and female learners utilized similar types and sub-types of apology strategies, though with marginal differences in frequencies. In similar vein, males favored mixed strategies more frequently, whereas females tended to employ secondary strategies. Further, some sub-types of strategies were not used by either gender. Overall, the results indicate both convergences and slight divergences in how Algerian male and female learners express apology.
