This study aims at understanding the different forms of support or mentoring that biology academics in Sétif1 University receive to face the challenges of writing and publishing research in English. The data obtained through an in-depth interview were analyzed qualitatively allowing the emergence of key themes on the respondents’ experiences, strategies and aspirations. The findings revealed frustration due to the paucity of experts willing to provide satisfactory support in both disciplinary and linguistic areas. Informants asserted also their need to strengthen language aspects in the manuscripts such as generic, discursive and lexico-grammatical ones. Mentoring and support in the context of courses and interdisciplinary scientific teams were suggested as solutions to ensure more autonomous development of research skills. This work underscores the importance of finding contexts where disciplinary and linguistic expertise can be shared among academics and offers insights to the social and collaborative nature of the research writing process.
