Fragmented Selves: Postcolonial And Postmodern Perspectives On Zadie Smith’s White Teeth

Authors : Behloul Meriem . Bouregbi Salah .

Abstract

The present research paper attempts to answer the following: How does White Teeth reflect the complexities of identity and cultural plurality within the intertwined contexts of postcolonialism and postmodernity? This question is particularly pertinent in the light of the ways in which the novel problematizes the notion of a unified national identity. By foregrounding characters who are caught between multiple cultural allegiances, Smith dismantles the simplistic binaries that have historically supported discourses of race, ethnicity, and modernity that have led to the creation of fragmented selves and hybrid identities in a metropolitan world.
