Authors : Behloul Meriem . Bouregbi Salah .

Abstract

This article revolves around self-issues, identity construction, social and cultural identity formation in multiethnic, multicultural societies as it shows in White Teeth and Brick Lane, where these two female novelists engage and try to show the role of history, origins and cultural heritage in constructing one’s self and identity. It seeks to elucidate the unequal power connections that structure multicultural behaviors and perceptions in late 20th-century Britain. However, living in a multiethnic diverse society has a big role in shaping identities, especially in the aftermath of war and in postmodern cosmopolitan atmosphere, where it is very hard to preserve your own origin that is why the self can be autonomous and constructed simultaneously. The article relies on multiculturalism as an approach along with some philosophical and critical grounds
