This study approaches Algerian toponyms as a living archive of collective memory and a site where identity is (re)configured. It argues that translating place names across Arabic, Amazigh, and French risks semantic loss, phonetic distortion, and historical displacement unless guided by clear standards balancing endonyms and exonyms. Using a tri-region sample (coast, interior, Sahara), the research integrates official and colonial maps, contemporary signage, and oral usage; conducts cross-lingual toponymic matching; analyzes Amazigh phoneme rendering; and proposes a decision matrix between semantic translation and transliteration, validated through local readability testing. The study recommends UNGEGN-informed standardization and bi/trilingual public display that preserves layered name histories while ensuring usability for residents and institutions.
