Distortion Of The Denotative Meaning In The English Translation Of Al-zilzal Novel

الملخص
This study aims to examine the distortion of denotative meaning in William Granara’s English translation of the Algerian novelist Tahar Wattar’s The Earthquake. The research adopts a descriptive method for the theoretical framework and a prescriptive analytical approach for the corpus analysis. The significance of this study lies in its investigation of the rendition of one of the most fundamental aspects of language—word and phrase denotations—arguably the most critical. The distortion of these meanings in translation results in the conveyance of unintended meanings that were not originally present in the novel. In addition to analysing the distortion of denotative meaning in the translation, the study seeks to identify the translation errors responsible for this distortion, explore their underlying causes, and assess their impact on the English rendition of the novel. The study provided answers to the research questions and confirmed most of the proposed hypotheses.
