The novel, as a constantly renewing genre, seeks to shape and form itself on the levels of structure, meaning, and aesthetics, by developing new narrative mechanisms and concepts. It aims through these to accommodate the changes occurring on the social structure level, and to create harmony and tension between the real and the imaginary, and between ideology and beauty. Indeed, one of the most prominent modern manifestations seen in the novel today, and especially on the formal level regarding focalization and narrative perspective, is the tendency towards polyphony and multiplicity of voices, or what has also been termed the thesis novel. This type of novel aims at undermining the authority of the singular vision that originates from the perspective of the godlike narrator or omniscient narrator prevalent in classical realistic narration and traditional narrative forms. This shift and formal tendency on the level of focalization and point of view did not merely represent an aesthetic shift or development; rather, it had ideological justification, expressing the desire of the narrating self to be free from all ideological constraints imposed by various types of censorship, and rejecting the stereotype of the single voice dominating opinion and controlling speech. Based upon this critique, a democratization of voices was established.
