This study examines traditional textile craftsmanship in the Djelfa region as a continuous artisanal practice rooted in the abundance of local raw materials, sustained by inherited technical skills, and culminating in products that serve multiple subsistence and cultural functions. The focus is placed on tracing the transformation of wool, goat hair, and camel hair from raw materials into finished textile products, while highlighting the close interconnections revealed by this production chain between the pastoral environment, the family-based organisation of labour, and local craft expertise. The data demonstrate that textile production in Djelfa was by no means a marginal activity; rather, it was integral to household income and fulfilled essential needs for clothing, bedding, tent- making, and storage. Furthermore, certain products — most notably the woollen burnous and the tent — carried distinct social and cultural significance. At the same time, the study reveals that this craft, despite its continuity, is undergoing transformations affecting its materials, functions, and conditions of production. These include the partial introduction of synthetic fibres, the decline of camel hair as a resource owing to the contraction of camel herding, and the shift of certain textiles from everyday use toward domains of cultural valorisation and ornamentation. The study concludes that traditional textile craft in the Djelfa region constitutes a form of living heritage, insofar as its continuity rests not merely on the preservation of ancient techniques, but on an ongoing interaction between material, skill, need, and transformation.
