Prospects Of Literature As Seen By Western Post-modernist Critics

Authors : Abdelkader Nebbou .

Abstract

: It was not until the 1960s that literature became taught as an independent discipline to underpin the Eurocentric thought and Western tradition. However, with the spread of postcolonial literature, there was the question of what literary texts are written in neutral language, since literature has most of the time been presented with biased concepts to serve the Westerners and to perpetuate their ideas (Snell-Hornby,1984K; Kühnhardt and Mayer, 2019). Nowadays, learners must be encouraged to develop their own interpretive opinions. The traditional idea that the teacher is the “doctor who knows” has become outdated and is no longer valid. According to modern critics, plurality of meaning leads to recognition of the others, their culture and their way of life; and the vast array of meanings turn our personal ideas into a part of constructive divergence (Coyle et al., 1988).
