Early intervention is one of the most important stages of rehabilitation for various categories of disability in general and for mentally retarded children, including those with Down syndrome, in particular. Cases of Down syndrome are easy to detect at a very early stage, which facilitates the task of developing a planned programme for early rehabilitation. Before discussing early intervention, it is important to refer to the term early detection in general. Early detection means screening children who suffer from disabilities, who are suspected of having disabilities, or who are susceptible to factors of disability or risk. This process can be carried out (regardless of the child's age) during pregnancy and to identify risks before pregnancy. Early detection is a preliminary stage that precedes diagnosis and can be carried out by mothers, fathers or teachers. It involves criteria for success or failure in quick test situations, on the basis of which the child is referred to specialists to diagnose their condition and make a final decision on the presence or absence of a disability. It is easy to detect severe impairment or Down syndrome from the first moments of a child's life. Early intervention is a procedure that involves designing and implementing special rehabilitation programmes for early childhood, as well as guidance and training programmes for children's families and determining the types of support services the child needs (speech therapy, assistive devices, physical therapy, auditory training, etc.). Early intervention programmes are offered to children with disabilities or who are at risk of disability from the moment of birth or the moment the disability is discovered or the moment the risk factors are identified, up to the age of six. Children with Down syndrome also need an effective and efficient means of communication that enables them to gain control over their environment. The inability to communicate effectively causes great frustration for the child, leading to the development of undesirable behaviours to express their desires, needs and feelings. Therefore, through this research paper, we wanted to highlight the importance of early education in developing language communication skills in children with Down syndrome.
