This article examines how the press and archives of the early twentieth century contributed to constructing and naturalizing a constraining female norm. Taking the figure of the female poisoner as a case study, we show how media discourses do not merely represent female criminals but produce them as deviant against an implicit gender norm. Drawing on discourse analysis tools (Maingueneau, 1987, 2004; Amossy, 2000; Rabatel, 2008) and the concepts of naturalization, stereotype, and topos, we identify the discursive mechanisms through which the “monstrous woman” is constructed, legitimized, and internalized.
