From Text To Screen: The Role Of Filmic Adaptation In Enhancing Algerian Efl Students’ Reading Comprehension

Authors : Mellit Djihane .

Abstract

This article seeks to address the question of how EFL teachers can enhance their students’ understanding of English literature. It adopts an experimental approach to assess the impact of film adaptations on students’ ability to comprehend English literary works through pre and post reading comprehension tests administered seventy (N=70) third year EFL students at Jijel University. The findings revealed that the reading comprehension of the targeted students was notably enhanced through the dual experience of reading the novel and watching its film adaptation, as indicated in the reading pre-test and post-test, which yielded a T-statistic of 7.686 and a P-value of 0.000. This highlights the benefits of using film adaptations in EFL literature teaching in Algeria, suggesting a pedagogical shift to include multimedia to better engage today’s learners.
