Preservation And Loss Of Cultural Meaning In Ai Translation: Evidence From Arabic-english Expressions

Abstract

This study examines how effectively AI-based translation tools preserve the cultural meaning of Arabic expressions in English translation. A purposively selected corpus of 20 culturally embedded expressions, including idioms, proverbs, euphemisms, and social expressions, was translated using Google Translate, ChatGPT (GPT-4o), and Gemini 2.5 Flash. Outputs were evaluated using a three-tier coding scheme based on cultural adequacy. The findings reveal clear performance differences, with ChatGPT and Gemini outperforming Google Translate, while idiomatic and high-context expressions remain especially prone to distortion
