This article examines the representation of the renegade, a Christian-turned-Turk, in the early modern Mediterranean world of captivity and conversion, as shaped by two modern novels by Rafael Sabatini and Chukri Khodja. Rooted in a history of corsairing, enslavement, and shifting allegiances, the renegade embodies complex negotiations of identity, faith, and cultural belonging. The study draws on historical sources and situates the figure of the captive-renegade within its broader socio-religious context. The analysis reveals how each novelist reimagines the renegade to reflect different visions of captivity, power, and identity.
