Beyond Mood Fluctuations: A Theoretical Approach To Cognitive Impairments In Bipolar Disorder.

Authors : Halheit Rania . Boussafsaf Zoubir .

Abstract

Cognitive impairments are among the most prominent clinical features of bipolar disorder, particularly affecting executive functioning, attention, and memory. This theoretical paper adopts an interpretative neuropsychological perspective to examine the nature of these cognitive disturbances and the principal dimensions underlying their expression. It also reviews key factors influencing cognitive performance, including neurobiological, clinical, and contextual determinants, while highlighting their implications for patients’ everyday functioning. A more comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of these impairments and the factors underlying their manifestation may improve therapeutic management by fostering the development of integrated and individualized treatment strategies. Such approaches could help reduce the impact of cognitive dysfunction throughout the course of the disorder while enhancing functional outcomes and overall quality of life.
