Researcher: Abdulaziz Hammado Qur’anic readings passed through several stages through which the science of readings developed. It began with the revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), followed by the stage of transmission and dissemination among the Companions. This was then followed by the compilation of the Muṣḥaf during the caliphate of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (may Allah be pleased with him) and the emergence of the term ʿUthmānic script (al-rasm al-ʿUthmānī). After that came the stage of dissemination in the various regions of the Islamic world and the emergence of a class of memorizers who specialized in Qur’anic readings, along with the appearance of the concept of selection (al-ikhtiyār), whereby readings began to be attributed to specific reciters. This development eventually led to the emergence of many different readings. Subsequently came the era of Ibn Mujāhid, marked by the emergence of the terms irregular readings (al-qirāʾāt al-shādhdha) and well-known readings (al-qirāʾāt al-mashhūra), as well as the formulation of the concept of the pillars of authentic readings, namely: sound transmission, conformity with the Arabic language, and conformity with the script of the Muṣḥaf. Then came the era of Ibn al-Jazarī, during which debates arose between him and the scholars of his time regarding the concept of tawātur (mass transmission) in the readings, alongside the emergence of the term istifāḍa (widespread transmission) and the acceptance of these readings by the Muslim community.
