Authors : Timadjer Narimene .

Abstract

Since the early 1980s, the Arab satellite broadcasting has witnessed profound transformations that have reshaped the structure of Arab media and its communication practices. Arab television broadcasting has moved from terrestrial to larger satellite space that extends political and geographical boundaries, establishing a new phase of cultural and media interaction. Technological advancements in satellites such as Arabsat, Nilesat, and Es'hailSat have contributed to a qualitative leap in communication and live broadcasting services, and have also given rise to new patterns of television production, financing, ownership, and content programming. This analytical study examines the evolution of the Arab satellite broadcasting at three interconnected levels: the structural and technological transformation of Arab satellite broadcasting, shifts in ownership patterns and the dominance of the private sector, and the development of satellite programming within the new digital era. The study aims at explaining how the technological revolution has determined the functions and the role of Arab media within the global cultural sphere. The findings show that despite of unlimited number and diversity of Arab satellite media, it remains controlled by the technical and content reliance which questions balancing the economic returns and its enlightening and cultural role
