This study explores games and sport in al-Andalus as a significant cultural and social phenomenon that extended beyond recreation. Under Umayyad rule, Andalusian society developed a distinctive model that integrated physical activity with intellectual, artistic, and political life. Sporting practices such as equestrian games, hunting, polo, and chess were closely linked to military training, social values, and expressions of power. The study highlights the role of intercultural exchange among Muslims, Christians, and Jews in shaping these practices, producing hybrid forms of leisure and performance. It argues that sport in al-Andalus functioned as a cultural system reflecting a broader philosophy of balance between body, intellect, and society, while also contributing to the transmission of these traditions to Europe.
