Abstract

Islamic banking has experienced remarkable growth over the past few decades, becoming an important financial sector that extends beyond the Islamic world to global markets. The industry has attracted the attention of investors and consumers seeking ethical financing alternatives that comply with Islamic law. However, behind this apparent success and the famous principle of ‘profit and loss sharing’ lies a complex set of hidden challenges facing Islamic banking finance. These challenges not only undermine the efficiency and effectiveness of this sector, but also threaten its philosophical and purposeful essence that distinguishes it from the traditional financial system. In this context, the case study of Jordan Islamic Bank stands out as a rich source of analysis. Studying this case provides a valuable opportunity to understand how these hidden challenges translate into reality in an economy with distinctive characteristics, where the bank operates in a legislative and economic environment dominated by the conventional financial system. This study highlights these hidden challenges facing Islamic banking, using the experience of the Jordan Islamic Bank as a practical example, in an effort to provide a clear vision of the future of Islamic finance and how to transform these challenges into opportunities for sustainable growth.
